Countries in the European Union – 2022

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political institution. It consists of 27 member states that have obligations and privileges that are part and parcel of the membership.

The EU Member Countries

Lithuania – Member country of the EU since May 1, 2004. The official language is Lithuanian. 

Romania – Member country of the EU since January 1, 2007. The official language is Romanian.

Belgium – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1958. The official languages in Belgium are Dutch, French and German.

Poland – Member country of the EU since May 1, 2004. The official language is Polish. 

Bulgaria – Member country of the EU since January 1, 2007. The official language in Bulgaria is Bulgarian.

Croatia – Member country of the EU since July 1, 2013. The official language in Croatia is Croatian.

Cyprus – Member country of the EU since May 1, 2004. The official language in Cyprus is Greek.

Denmark – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1973. The official language in Denmark is Danish.

Sweden – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1995. The official language is Swedish.

Finland – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1995. The official languages in Finland are Finnish and Swedish.

France – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1958. The official language is French.

Germany – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1958.The official language is German. 

Hungary – Member country of the EU since May 1, 2004. The official language is Hungarian. 

Ireland – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1973. The official languages in Ireland are Irish and English.

Greece – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1981. The official language is Greek. 

Italy – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1958. The official language in Italy is Italian. 

Latvia – Member country of the EU since May 1, 2004. The official language is Latvian.

Luxembourg – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1958. The official languages in Luxembourg are French and German. 

Malta – Member country of the EU since May 1, 2004. The official language is Maltese

Czech Republic – Member country of the EU since May 1, 2004. The official language is Czech.

Netherlands – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1958. The official language is Dutch.

Austria – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1995. The official language in Austria is German.

Spain – Member country of the EU since January 1, 1986. The official language in Spain is Spanish.

Estonia – Member country of the EU since May 1, 2004. The official language is Estonian.
